Musical Pool Table
The Concept
This group wanted to build a unique pool table where a musical cue signals when a ball gets in the pocket, and also when all the balls are in. This would help solve arguments about when a ball is potted and who has won the game as well as giving positive feedback to players and a way of celebrating success.
The Creation
The team planned the general design steps for the project and investigated rough costings for the key components. This meant shopping around for construction materials, electronic components and of course pool essentials.
They had to change their original plans many times during the process and also had to consult construction and electronics experts for key steps. There were also some skills to learn and practice along the way, mainly how to work with different materials, adhesives, and of course soldering and testing the electronic circuitry. One team member had a parent who was a painter and owned a van so that made the finishing and transport aspects a lot easier.
They were pleased that the main parts were completed just in time for the Expo and the original concept worked. Now they’re thinking about how to market their product and diversify the concept, applying it in other scenarios.
