Intelligent Water Management System
The Concept
Imagine if your plants could call you when they actually needed watering? This would save you time and save the country a lot of water. Well, this project was designed to achieve just that… and a lot more!
The Creation
This project commenced with the design of an electronic 'soil moisture measuring probe'. The original idea was to monitor the soil of school grounds, and prevent over-watering by the automated watering system if the soil was still moist.
The group soon realised that a reverse principle could also be applied; by inserting a modified probe into the soil of a pot plant, the probe was designed to activate a buzzer when the soil was dry. From this came the expression; "If I bleep, please water me."
The students not only learnt about electronics and our environment, but also about the science of soils. Expansion plans for the project include a network of wireless soil probes which would be capable of communication back to an intelligent PC based control system.
“We believe that every home and school should have an Intelligent Water Management System similar to ours. With it, every drop of water we use will be carefully managed.”
