The Concept

Save money and the planet, with an amazing solar powered home lighting system!

The Creation

Before the students started this project, they knew very little about how solar energy is created, how the energy is stored, and how it can be used to enhance our lifestyle.

By the time they completed the work they understood a lot more about electronics and electricity, as well as how effective LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes) were. The students also appreciated the value of applying sound Project Management principles during the development process.

The group commenced with designing the electronics, which turned out to be easier than expected. Once that was completed, they constructed a model house to test the system, and which they knew could also be used as an ideal display model.

Upon reviewing their completed work (as specified in Project Management), the students were able to identify added potential for the project. Design enhancements would include a day-light sensor that would automatically turn certain solar lights on at night and off during the day, and by adding motion sensors, certain lights could be turned off in rooms which are no longer occupied.

This project offers a safe and effective way of managing home lighting when away for long periods, or to simply to light up public amenities in the evenings, such as parks and beaches.
