engineering challenge
The Science and Engineering Challenge is a national competition for schools, directed to students in Years 9 and 10, that engages students through competitive hands-on science-based activities that are both challenging and fun. Students explore scientific principles for themselves, with a minimum of introduction and theory. The aim is to encourage more boys and girls to continue with their science and maths studies to Year 12 and beyond.
The Challenge - a product of the University of Newcastle - has been running now for seven years. The South Australian Challenge, which is now in its 5th year, is organised by a committee made up of representatives of Rotary International and Engineers Australia. In 2007 it ran for five days in Adelaide and one day in each of Port Pirie and Mount Gambier; approximately 1,700 students from 50 schools took part.
Corporate, educational and professional sponsors have provided the necessary funds in the past, with the State Government making a contribution this year for the first time; a large team of volunteers provides the necessary supervision.
